Why Winter Worsens COPD and Asthma: A Seasonal Health Warning

Winter months are particularly challenging for patients with chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD and asthma. Cold air causes airway narrowing, increased mucus production, and reduced lung defense mechanisms, making breathing more difficult.

Additionally, viral and bacterial infections are more common in winter, often triggering severe exacerbations that may require hospitalization or ICU care. Symptoms such as breathlessness, persistent cough, wheezing, and chest tightness tend to worsen during this season.

Preventive measures like regular inhaler use, pulmonary function testing, vaccination, early medical consultation, and avoiding cold exposure can significantly reduce complications. Early pulmonology care during winter can prevent emergency admissions and improve quality of life.
